The Story
The book England tried to keep from America.
In 1782, with the Revolutionary War still raging and Scripture nearly impossible to obtain, a Philadelphia printer named Robert Aitken set out to do what no one in America had done before: print a complete English Bible on American soil, for an American people.
It earned its nickname as the "Bible of the Revolution" when England had cut off the colonies' only supply of Bibles, and Aitken's edition rose to meet the need as the war drew to its close. The Congress fighting for independence did something it has never done before or since, unanimously endorsing his work and recommending the Bible of the Revolution "to the inhabitants of the United States."
Small enough to fit in a Continental soldier's coat pocket and printed five years before the Constitution itself, it stands at the very foundation of the nation. Robert Aitken gave everything to make it, and died in debt and obscurity for his sacrifice.
Of the ten thousand copies printed, fewer than fifty survive today.
